Who Wants to be a Millionaire?: Canadian Edition is a Canadian-English speaking game show that was based on the British format of the same name (minus the "Canadian Edition" part in the title).

Gameplay

As with in the U.K. and U.S. versions at the time respectively, Contestants tried to answer 15 multiple choice questions correctly in order to win $1,000,000.

Here's how they score for each question (amounts in bold are guaranteed sums, though the amounts themselves are not cumulative):

In addition (as you can see), contestants were guaranteed $1,000 for correctly answering the fifth question correctly and $32,000 for their tenth question correctly.

Lifelines

During the game, contestants were allowed to use three lifelines (i.e. 50:50, Phone a Friend and Ask the Audience) to help them. More than one lifeline may be used on any one question, but each lifeline can be used only once.

• 50:50 - Two incorrect answers were discarded by the computer leaving only one incorrect answer & the correct answer, of course.
• Ask the Audience - The audience was given the same question as the contestant, and their job was to vote on which answer they think is correct by pressing one of four lettered buttons on their keypads.
• Phone-a-Friend - The contestant can call a friend or family member and ask the current question for 30 seconds, and the phoned friend gave his/her answer.

Trivia

The show was taped on the ABC Television Network set of the American version of that show. Canadian audiences and contestants were flown to New York for tapings of the two specials. Prior to this, following the airing of the two specials CTV did announce that additional episodes of the Canadian edition would be produced later on. However, they never came to fruition.

Bill Shizas was the first contestant on the Canadian edition.

The biggest winner during the show's short-lived two episode only run was Francois Dominic Laramee, (a writer from Verdun, Quebec) who's total in cash was $64,000.
